Dr. Shyla

A lifetime devoted to improving the healthcare of the adivasi tribes in the Nilgiris, retired doctors Shyla, NK, and their son in law Udayan run their farm following the principals of natural and organic farming. The tremendous good vibes rub off on the coffee, and it’s among the best we’ve ever tasted. Check out their website to schedule a stay at their amazing home stay, and order other organic products, like pepper and turmeric. All growing with the coffee! http://www.gourifarms.com/wp/

Madhu

A lifetime spent fighting for tribal rights, Madhu still continues to fight the good fight to this day. A botanist to boot, his understanding of plants, and yams in particular, is simply incredible. Their coffee undergoes the most meticulous plucking we’ve ever witnessed : up to 10 rounds, spaced over months. With the most beautiful process of hand hulling the coffee, a visit to the farm is always an enchanting experience.

In his own words ”our coffee is grown in natural forest shade in the Palani hills, about 25 kms from Kodaikanal. The trees in the estate include various species of Ficus, Celtis and Grewia, as well as lesser knownclimbers whose fruit are relished by hornbills, hill mynas and other birds endemic to the western ghats.

Its truly some of the most exquisite Arabica we tasted. You can find Madhu’s coffee under their own brand IYER THOTTAM, if you were to visit Kodi.

With over a hundred species of bird identified in the estate, the coffee drips the richness of the biodiversity all around.

Subhash @ Sarangavillas Home Base

With a burning passion for organic farming, he converted 5 acres of plantation organic to show the planter world that organic is the way to go. A lot of our coffee knowledge comes from Subhash’s vast pools of experience, and it’s no secret, that when it comes to coffee in the Gudalur valley, all roads lead to Subhash.

They have their own brilliant brand called roasted sienna http://www.rocklandscoffee.com/

What’s more, this 5 acre old Peredenia plantation is also home to Ruby’s coffee. Sharing a boundary with the tiger reserve, coffee work is often interrupted by passing herds of elephants. This is where we learn and practice how to grow coffee ourselves.
